Project Description

In response to healthy eating and COVID 19 shocks and disruptions in food supplies to the urban areas during the lock down, The Winrock International in conjunction with Launch Out Now Foundation organized a 4daysTrain the Trainer (ToT) in organic and urban farming workshop, held at Lagos. Mainland Local Government Area (LGA) Hall from 27th -30th, April 2021.

The founder of the Launch Out Now Foundation (LONF) and host DR. Mercy Adeogun was motivated by the attendance and participation of the trainees. The 38 participants (19females.19males and 4youths) were drawn from LONF staff and volunteers, Extension staff of Lagos State Agricultural Development Programme (LSADP), Otto Awori and Mainland LGAs staff, practicing farmers, individuals interested in organic agriculture.

The TOT workshop was facilitated by Mr. Abdullahi Yakubu (Nigeria) and Professor W. J. Zimmerman (USA). Course contents include: Overview of organic farming, seed germination test, organic and urban farming using containers such as sack, plastics, vertical farming etc.

The training ended with presentation of certificate of attendance to the participants. In conclusion, growing food in sacks with limited space and limited water is smart farming in urban areas.

The founder of LONF, Dr. Mercy Adeogun recommended that urban farming should be promoted as a source of ensuring availability of nutritious and wholesome homegrown foods for the populace and reduce reliance on smallholder farmers for food production.
